make it in this release?
Yeah it works
SIP-72 was only just recently accepted after the release cutoff. So it didn’t “make it” in the sense of being preview or on by default. It’s still under experimental. I’ll bring this up in the core meeting. Maybe we should make it preview already in 3.10.
Yeah it’s a relatively uncontroversial SIP, and it would be nice to have it in preview since otherwise all my own com-lihaoyi libraries cannot use it for another 12-18 months or however long it takes to get the next version out.
Also this language feature is pretty self contained, e.g. it doesn’t go “viral” like some others where downstream code can depend on a library using a new feature and get locked in, which is the reason we made “experimental” viral in the first place. Dedented string literals are purely local to a file, and a dedented string literal can always be swapped back to a traditional single or multiline literal without impacting downstream code
The first version of dedented string literals landed in 3.10.0-RC1 in Dedented string literals alternative implementation by odersky · Pull Request #26332 · scala/scala3 · GitHub as experimental - it means we’d need to make it a preview feature on arrival which not something that follows the established process.
Being in preview means we’re limited in changes that can be done to it, which is not the case for experimental features. And since we have not yet had any exposure for this feature in any of the stable releases yet it also means we could not have collected any real feedback from users.
The further decision remains to the Core, but I’d be voting against and opting to make it preview in 3.11.
According to schedule development cycle for 3.11.0 should start on 10th November and stable 3.11.0 to be expected by end of December or first week of January. 3.12.0 is expected in May 2027 and that’s the earliest SIP-72 can land as stable.
Surely you are joking @lihaoyi , not everybody is happy with
What happend to the wise words below??
For a collection of the unhappy people see the original thread. With all due respect of your really wonderful contributions to Scala, imho, this is not one of them. I feel it has been pushed through.
I re-read the thread, and I’m still unsure why single-" was discarted ?
It felt like every message in support got more or less ignored
(especially in the latter parts of the discussion)
If I remember correctly there are edge cases that pose a problem with a single ".
The ones I saw seemed very minor
And regardless, I think if Pre-SIP concerns are to be dismissed (some concerns always need to be to go forward), I think it would be good to have them written down somewhere, so we can have a clear view of the trade-offs that were made
